django gypsy kitchen and saloon closes downtown ~ what now, atlanta?

But there’s movement at the space

Downtown’s Django Gypsy Kitchen and Saloon closed last week, according to nearby businesses.

Located at 495 Peachtree Street NE next to Atlanta’s largest homeless shelter, a visit to the space confirms they’ve shuttered.

Highly placed sources say the restaurant owners walked out on the lease.

But whether or not they’ve closed for good is still up for debate and has not been confirmed.

Staff at the neighboring hair studio suggest Django’s planned on closing for renovations to reopen under new management as a similar concept. These rumors surfaced late last year, presumably in November.

There is indication that would suggest this rumor to be true: ladders and other constructional equipment look in use, lights are left on and flooring seems to be getting replaced.

All circumstantial of course, considering the landlord may just be making improvements to the abandoned space.

I honestly thought this place closed over a year ago.

Visited that place when it first opened. Liked it, but the aggressive panhandling in front made that not matter. I’m no stranger to homeless people, but that shelter really makes it hard for a restaurant.

SHUT THE SHELTER DOWN. IT IS DIGUSTING AND DOESN’T HELP THE HOMELESS. I’VE SEEN DRUG DEALS IN BROAD DAYLIGHT AND PEOPLE PISSING ON THE STREET.

That is not a homeless shelter – it’s a BUM hangout. There’s a huge difference between someone who is truly homeless and in need of help, and someone who’s a bum/panhandler. We have SOME homeless people in Atlanta, but they do find help with the various agencies set up for it. The bums (numbering in the thousands) don’t seek help, and don’t want it.

As long as there’s still a large issue with panhandling here as well as the “smash and grab capital of America” that Atlanta has earned the title of, you can’t expect many places like this to survive long term here.

Yea one of my friends told me the owners were getting ready to close it down because of the lack of business. Probably a bad location for the place being next to a homeless “shelter”. I did get panhandled the one time that I came in through the front, but other times, I just entered from the rear so that was never really a problem. And yes there are homeless people laying all over the place where we parked. We were almost afraid to leave our cars there. Parking in the rear of DJangos was a slight headache, though, because the lot was so small.
